Americans spend nearly $100,000 in their lifetime in the name of holiday spirit, according to a recent study*. In fact, 69 percent say they spend more on their home now than any other time of year.
That’s a lot of garland.
It’s a big job getting a home ready for the holidays. Sixty-two percent of those surveyed say there’s always work to do around the house and more than 70 percent reveal the need to renovate their home prior to their guests’ arrival. This probably accounts for the $235 yearly average spent on holiday home décor and $645 on other festive hosting essentials.
Are there specific rooms that get the holiday makeover love more than others? The living room tops the list with 29 percent wanting it changed. If that’s the case – what’s the best bang for your buck way to give the room a refresh?
Answer: a fresh coat of paint. Twenty-seven percent of those surveyed plan to paint their house prior to having guests over for the holidays. If you plan on doing it, replacing your area rug or buying a new lamp can add to the new look.
“For under $250, you can make your home holiday ready with simple touches like wreaths, garland, throw pillows and trees,” said Caroline Harmon, a Lowe’s trend and style expert.
Other refresh ideas include making the most of your mantle, brightening your home with string lights or anchoring your holiday fireplace decor with a large element like a snow-flocked wreath. Make sure to buy the tallest and fullest tree that will fit comfortably in your space.
Other desired room upgrades included the kitchen (22 percent), the guest room (21 percent), the dining room (21 percent) and the guest bathroom (17 percent).
And you can’t think of holidays without gift giving. Half of those surveyed say they plan to buy gifts for others and themselves. The average person spends $375.
If you need some ideas for what gifts to give – don’t fret, Lowe’s has something for everyone.
No matter what gift, renovation or refresh your set your sights on – Lowe’s hopes to help you make your home merry and bright this holiday season.
