The following letter to Lowe’s Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Niblock is from a mother in Toledo, Ohio. It’s a letter thanking the company for building a playground and making an impact on her family and community. The grant is similar to the many projects funded by the Lowe’s Foundation.
The foundation’s primary philanthropic focus centers on K–12 public education and community improvement. Within these areas, Lowe’s is committed to supporting projects that have the greatest impact on our communities and align with the company’s purpose: to help people love where they live.
“Hello Mr. Niblock,
I am not certain if this is your correct email address but I thought I would try it as well as regular mail to send you this message.
I am not certain how often you are able to see or hear the immediate benefits and effect your company’s charitable efforts have on the community. However, I wanted to share this with you. Our principal was instrumental in receiving a grant to add an addition to the existing playground. The incredible thing is that it is an adaptive playground for children with disabilities/special needs.
Our son has special needs – cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and alternating hemiplegia of childhood. While the first two medical terms I am certain you recognize, the third is a rare genetic neurological disorder that causes intermittent paralysis to his body. In short, he loses the ability to walk, sit up, or use his limbs often. There is no cure for this condition.
He is the oldest of our 3 sons so his life has been quite a whirlwind. He has had a very happy yet eventful life. Every day he is faced with his limitations. He does not have a handicap accessible home so it requires some lifting and creativity from me and my husband on days when his limbs are paralyzed. It is so uplifting and encouraging that Lowe’s was able to offer this grant to enhance the lives of my son and other students while at school!!! When the principal told me about the idea last year and asked for my input, I was ecstatic! When I found out it came through and would be complete this school year it brought tears to my eyes.
I said all this to say that I want to say THANK YOU for your company providing a way for families like mine!!! To be able to know my whether my son is in his wheelchair that day or able to walk or play on the playground it is safe for kids like him.
Most often in public he has to sit out of activities and watch his brothers play in areas that are not safe for him. Sometimes at home he cannot walk up and down the steps behind his brothers to play in the basement. With this new addition to the school playground, there are no limits. Thank you again from my heart.
God bless you!
