Disabled vet – and his dog – find a home at Lowe’s

Customers shopping at the Lowe’s store on Ridgemont Drive in Abilene, Texas, sometimes do a double take when they see a dog – a golden retriever named Charlotte wearing a Lowe’s red vest. But like her owner, Air Force veteran Clay Luthy, Charlotte is working, too.

Luthy, who served three tours of duty in Iraq and sustained a military-connected disability, worked as a handyman for six years. He started looking for a job and wanted to find an employer who wouldn’t mind having his service dog by his side.

“I was trying to figure out where I could go that would be a good fit and it wouldn’t mind having Charlotte, and my wife said I was at Lowe’s so much anyway, I might as well get a job there.”

“I was trying to figure out where I could go that would be a good fit and it wouldn’t mind having Charlotte, and my wife said I was at Lowe’s so much anyway, I might as well get a job there,” he said.

Luthy and Charlotte’s first day as part-time weekday team members was October 3. In December, the pair became an online sensation. A customer visiting the store snapped a photo of Luthy and Charlotte and posted it on her Facebook page. It took the Internet by storm, grabbing interest from more than 400 news organizations across the U.S., including NBC’s “Nightly News.”
