In 2019, trends like matte black, statement lighting and flooring, and outdoor décor had their shining moment. But what’s in store for the new decade? Check out some of the most anticipated 2020 home design trends and DIY tips from Caroline Harmon, Lowe’s trend and style expert, for easy, budget-friendly ways to incorporate them throughout the home.
From farmhouse to boho chic, these trend color palettes are lightening up to evoke a sense of calm and serenity as people look to simplify their living spaces.
Lighter colors can easily be incorporated with any style using blush tones on top of beige and warm whites, or by adding soft wood tones like beige and honey to cabinetry and flooring. For furniture pieces, lighter wood tones with visible grains are also trending.
Not only do these colors help soften the mood, they also brighten the area.
DIY Tip: Use shades between brown and grey, like mushroom and oyster to achieve a calm neutral. Or for something more fun, try HGTV HOME’s Romance, a warm, pale pink.
While many enjoy a lighter color palette, others are looking for bolder touches and ways to embrace maximalism without adding clutter. Expect more extravagant décor, bold tiling, heavily veined marbles, statement ceilings, lots of textures and patterns in moody hues (think: dark greens, blues and reds).
DIY Tip: Incorporate these colors on accent walls (these aren’t going away!) and wallpaper for a dramatic pop. Peel and stick wallpaper is a perfect yet temporary option to try out these colors.
The selfcare movement is here to stay, and for good reason. More people are devoting time and energy to maintaining healthy lifestyles. One way is through the creation of sanctuary spaces where they can retreat and relax. These spaces are moving beyond the bedroom and into bathrooms where more time is spent prepping for the day and unwinding at night.
DIY Tip: Don’t be afraid to add comfy pieces – chaise lounges, benches and rugs – for a luxurious yet cozy vibe that feels just right.
